BAT BIOLOGY & REMOVAL CENTRAL FLORIDA

UNDERSTANDING BATS IN CENTRAL FLORIDA

Bats are one of the most important native wildlife species in the Orlando area. While often misunderstood, they play a critical role in controlling insect populations and maintaining ecological balance throughout Central Florida.

A single bat can consume thousands of insects in one night, making bats highly beneficial natural pest controllers.

In the Greater Orlando area, bats commonly roost in:
- Attics and rooflines
- Soffits and fascia gaps
- Tile roof gaps and roof vents
- Palm trees and natural cavities
- Wall voids and construction gaps

When bats enter homes or commercial buildings, they are typically searching for warm, protected roosting areas—not acting aggressively toward humans.

BAT BEHAVIOR AND BIOLOGY

Florida is home to multiple bat species, including:
- Mexican free-tailed bats
- Evening bats
- Big brown bats
- Brazilian free-tailed bats

The most common bat species found living inside man-made structures in Central Florida is the Mexican free-tailed bat.

Bats are nocturnal animals, meaning they become active at dusk and return to their roosts before sunrise.

They use echolocation to:
- Navigate in darkness
- Locate insects while hunting
- Detect openings and hollow spaces suitable for roosting

The Mexican Free-Tailed Bat (also known as Brazilian Free-Tailed Bat) Is Florida's most common bat species and the most likely to invade your home.

BAT REPRODUCTION AND MATERNITY COLONIES

Bats are highly social animals with strong maternal instincts.

Female bats gather together in maternity colonies during the spring and summer months to raise their young collectively. Mexican free-tailed bats are known to assist one another in caring for pups within the colony.

Important bat reproduction facts:
- Females typically give birth to one pup per year
- Most births occur during April and May
- Baby bats are born flightless Bat pups remain dependent on their mothers for several months
- Colonies often return to the same roosting locations year after year

Because juvenile bats cannot fly, they are completely dependent on their mothers for survival. Removal of bats during maternity season results in trapped bat pups that starve without their mother. For this reason, Florida strictly regulates bat removal during maternity season to protect these juveniles.

ROOSTING BEHAVIOR AND COLONY EXPANSION

Bats prefer elevated, tight, protected spaces that shield them from:
- Predators
- Sunlight
- Rain and wind
- Temperature fluctuations

This is why structures with:
- Tile roofs
- Roof returns
- Soffit gaps
- Construction voids
often become ideal roosting locations.

When colonies grow too large, bats begin searching for additional nearby roosting sites.

Bats communicate using specialized vocalizations and are highly sensitive to:
- The sounds of other bats
- Guano and scent markings
- Exploration clicks from scouting bats

Once a single bat discovers a suitable structure, others often follow quickly.

Because of this behavior, even very small openings can rapidly develop into large established bat colonies.

IMPORTANT:
 BAT PROTECTION LAWS FLORIDA

Bats are protected wildlife in Florida and are regulated by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC).

It is illegal to:
- Kill bats
- Poison bats
- Harm active colonies
- Seal bats inside structures

- Disturb bats during protected maternity season

Improper bat removal can result in:
- Significant fines
- Legal penalties
- Severe contamination problems inside structures

BAT MATERNITY SEASON FLORIDA

Protected Season:
April 16th - August 14th

During this time:
- Baby bats are unable to fly
- Colonies cannot legally be excluded from structures
- Bat-proofing work may require special permitting or delayed scheduling

This law exists to prevent flightless pups from becoming trapped and dying inside buildings.

Legal Bat Exclusion Season
August 15th - April 15th

During this period:
- Humane, non-lethal bat exclusion is permitted
- One-way exclusion devices may legally be installed
- Full bat removal and sealing work can typically be completed

This is the primary season for bat removal services throughout Florida.

HOW PROFESSIONAL BAT REMOVAL WORKS

Effective bat removal is a humane exclusion process—not extermination.

The goal is to:
- Allow bats to safely leave
- Prevent them from returning
- Permanently secure the structure

The longer a bat colony exists in your property-your house, the greater the risk more nuisance animals decide to move in too. This is why we at Critter 911 strongly recommend proactive measures even during bat maternity season. Speak with an expert today.

Step 1: Bat Inspection

A professional inspection identifies:
- Primary and secondary entry points
- Active roosting areas
- Colony size and activity patterns
- Guano accumulation
- Structural vulnerabilities

Bat infestations often begin with a single primary entry point, but colonies will quickly locate additional openings if the structure is not fully sealed.

Step 2: Humane Bat Exclusio

Professional one-way exclusion devices are installed over active exits.

These devices:
- Allow bats to leave safely at night
- Prevent re-entry into the structure
- Do not harm the animals

Humane exclusion devices are only legal for use outside of maternity season.

Step 3: Permanent Bat Proofing

Once the colony has fully exited, all openings are professionally sealed using durable exclusion materials. At Critter 911, we use stainless steel mesh, a premium material impervious to rodent teeth, to seal entry points.

Note: What Bats attract

Bats are prey to many other large animals found in Florida. Raccoons and Opossums are both known to prey on the flightless bat pups when they are able to reach them. Raccoons especially are known to wait by bat entry points to nab them as they fly out to hunt.

Proper sealing protects structures against:
- Rats
- Squirrels
- Birds
- Raccoons
- Opossums

And with our Lifetime Renewable Warranty, your home will be nuisance animal free for the rest of your life just as an added benefit of our bat removal service.

Permanent exclusion is the most important step in preventing recurring infestations.

Step 4: Guano Cleanup & Sanitization

Bat colonies often leave behind large accumulations of guano and urine contamination.

This can lead to:
- Strong odors
- Damaged insulation
- Air quality concerns
- Mold and fungal growth
- Staining and contamination

Professional remediation services may include:
- Guano removal
- Attic sanitation
- Odor treatment
- Insulation replacement
- Attic restoration

SIGNS YOU HAVE A BAT IN YOUR HOME

Common Bat Entry Points:
- Roof returns
- Ridge vents
- Tile gaps
- Construction gaps
- Gable vents

Common warning signs include:
- Scratching or fluttering noises at dusk
- Chirping or squeaking sounds
- Small dark droppings near rooflines or walls
- Staining around entry points
- Strong ammonia-like odors in attic spaces
- Bats flying from the roofline at sunset

WHY PROFESSIONAL BAT REMOVAL IS NECESSARY

Early detection is important to prevent colonies from expanding further.

Even during maternity season, while bat removal is illegal, there are steps you can take to prevent bat colonies from doubling in size before it is legal to remove. Talk with an expert today

Bat removal is not a DIY-friendly process in Florida due to:
- Wildlife protection laws
- Biological complexity
- Structural sealing requirements
- Health and contamination concerns

Improper removal attempts can:
- Trap bats inside walls or attics
- Cause bats to relocate deeper into the structure
- Create odor and contamination problems
- Violate Florida wildlife regulations

Professional bat exclusion ensures the process is:
- Legal
- Humane
- Thorough
- Permanent when properly sealed

Critter 911 understands that bats are our treasured friends. Bats are more than crucial to our ecosystem, they are crucial to our way of life. Without them, out  of control mosquito populations would make just standing outside unbearable. Without them, plagues of insects would devour our great Florida crops.

Protecting bats and protecting your home go hand in hand. Proper humane exclusion ensures bats can continue benefiting our environment and our great state—just where they belong: outside your home.
